WHAT IS A TYPICAL CYBER CLEAN CENTER?
A Cyber Clean Center, as defined by the authority on the subject,
the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs, is a populated facility
of skilled experts, active in analyzing characteristics of BOTs,
which have been a threat against the Internet, providing information
on system cleansing of threats, BOTs, from users' computers.
BEWARE!
Botnets have emerged as one of the most significant security
threat on the Internet today. Due to multiple infection and
attack sourcing that they often utilize, there is no single security
technology which can defend against all serious botnet threats.
PURPOSE OF A CYBER CLEAN CENTER
BOT, a type of fraudulent program with which infection has been
associated in recent years, has a vast and varried array of sub-types. Due
to these vastly differing 'looks' of the threat, it is difficult to clean BOTs using conventional types
of isolation, cleaning and disposal methods against these computer viruses. Since attack and
infection activities of BOTs are taken in constrained portions of
programs and not easily seen, users most often do not realize what is
being installed and going on inside of their computers. According to
Cisco, "For the safe
Internet environment, this is the epicenter of the most serious
problem. This situation requires understanding BOTs' attack and
infection activities and promoting users to clean BOTs from their
infected computers, through providing countermeasures against BOTs.
Under such circumstances, Cyber Clean Center has been established
aiming to be continuously active in such a field as an integrated
base organization to coordinate among relating institutions and ISPs
(Internet Service Providers), BOT countermeasure information
preparers and security vendors."
BOT / BOTNET - EXACTLY WHAT IS IT?
The most easily understandable, layman's, non-technical definition
of Botnet: is a robot network or a group of
computers running a computer application controlled and manipulated only by the
owner or that software source. The term 'Botnet' may refer to a
legitimate network of several computers sharing program
processing amongst them.
A botnet is an 'army' of compromised machines, also known as
'zombies,' that are under the command and control of a single 'botmaster.'
Most computer users in developed areas are now broadband which has increased the power of botnets to launch crippling denial of service (DoS) attacks on
servers, infect millions of computers with spyware and other
malicious code, steal identity data and send out vast quantities of
spam. Most dangerous to the innocent individual, these Botnets engage in
keystroke monitoring, blackmail, click fraud, and extortion.
Botnets are the primary security threat
to the Internet today. Many thousands of
machines are typically part of a single Botnet. They are hard to
detect because they easily and quickly adapt their
look and behavior to evade common security defenses that we
traditionally buy from the our local office supply store or as we
upgrade our protections as prompted annually.
The first line of defense,
absent a better and more coordinated plan is for IT security groups must prevent corporate
nets from becoming
part of a botnet, protecting corporate resources from
attack.
